Nudge letters
What is a nudge letter?
Nudge letters are used by HMRC as a proactive way to get businesses and individuals to address potential errors. Their purpose is to prompt the taxpayer into reviewing their tax returns and finances, as they may require a disclosure to HMRC.
The approach allows HMRC to contact a significant number of taxpayers, with the aim to collect any unpaid tax, with relatively minimal effort.
Why have I received a nudge letter?
Nudge letters are usually sent out en-masse as part of a campaign and relate to specific areas of tax. Therefore your personal or businesses’ tax position means you could fall into the campaign category they are targeting.
However, it is important to note, due to the tactic used by HMRC in sending out nudge letters, it is possible to receive one informing you of, for example, tax owed over the disposal of property, when it is inaccurate or not applicable to you.
What should you do if you receive a nudge letter?
If you receive a nudge letter it is important to respond promptly. In this event, Wilson Partners can assist you with any communication with HMRC. To avoid the nudge letter developing into a query, we would review your affairs and either confirm to HMRC that no further action is required or assist in making a disclosure to HMRC.
